Is Beale Street Safe?

People always ask me, “Is Beale Street safe?”.

Most people feel safe on Beale Street during the day and early evening due to high foot traffic and police presence. However, caution is advised late at night, especially on weekends. Travel in groups, secure belongings, and stay in well-populated areas to ensure a positive experience.

I understand that Memphis is a dangerous city. You will see many homeless people and may be approached by beggars. Politely decline, and, in my experience, you'll be fine.

I've been to Memphis many times and was recently there to visit Beale Street. We walked Beale Street during the day and observed a strong police presence and many people, including families with children walking around safely.

Being a major tourist attraction, the city emphasizes safety. However, like in any city, there are precautions you should take:

  1. Be aware of your surroundings, especially during late nights or weekends, when some visitors feel less safe. As a side note, the most recent crime occurred in the very early morning hours.
  2. Traveling in groups rather than alone is recommended, particularly at night.
  3. Secure personal belongings and be wary of potential pickpockets.
  4. While many visitors have felt completely safe, some recommend avoiding the area on specific nights, like Saturday nights or New Year's Eve, due to increased drinking and the potential for disturbances.
  5. Stay in well-populated areas and be cautious in parking lots or less populated areas around Beale Street.

Beale Street is generally safe, particularly during the day. As with visiting any city, it's essential to stay alert, use common sense, and trust your instincts.

Hotels Near Beale Street

For extra levels of safety, there are two excellent hotels right on Beale Street (you won't have to walk downtown). They are the Westin and The Hampton. Both of the hotels overlook Beale Street.
