The U.S. Cities Tourists Swear They’ll Never Visit Again—And the #1 Pick Wasn’t Even Close

We asked people to name the U.S. cities they’d never return to—and they didn’t hold back. Some of the answers were harsh, and one city stood out above the rest.

Memphis

Memphis dominated the conversation more than any other city. Dozens of people said they'd skip a return trip.

One visitor pointed out that Memphis gets unfairly criticized. “Any city has issues and areas that you should stay away from after a certain time of the evening,” they explained. Fair point — but the sheer volume of Memphis mentions tells its own story.

New Orleans

The Big Easy came in second place, with plenty of visitors saying once was enough. Several people kept their responses short and blunt: “New Orleans” with no explanation needed.

One person called it “absolute trash” while others simply said they wouldn't return. The city's reputation for partying apparently doesn't translate into repeat visits for everyone.

Chicago

The Windy City earned multiple mentions from people who said they're done. No detailed explanations — just a consistent “nope, not going back” vibe from visitors who've already been.

Vegas

Las Vegas

Vegas got called out repeatedly. Some people abbreviated it to just “Vegas” while others went with “Las Vegas” — but the message was the same either way.

New York

New York City

Multiple people said they'd skip NYC on their next trip. One visitor got specific: “Dirty and very Rude.” Another kept it simple with just “NY.”

Portland

Portland, Oregon

Portland appeared frequently in the responses. One person added “shithole” to their answer. Another mentioned they visited “before it got really bad.”

Several visitors specifically called out Portland's current state as the reason they won't return.

Los Angeles

LA earned its spot with consistent mentions throughout the comments. One person called it “a scary scary place.” Others just said they'd skip it without elaborating.

Detroit

Detroit showed up repeatedly in the “never again” category. Multiple people mentioned it without explanation — the city name alone said enough for them.

Philadelphia

Philly got called out by several visitors. One creative commenter called it “Filthiladelphia,” which pretty much sums up their feelings.

San Francisco

San Francisco rounded out the top ten with multiple mentions. One person added a string of poop emojis to emphasize their point. Another called it a “cesspool” and mentioned they visited in the '80s but wouldn't go back now.
