Metro Police Prevent Possible Broadway Tragedy — New Safety Barriers Coming Soon

It was a tense night on Lower Broadway, but thanks to quick work by Metro Police, a frightening situation never turned into something worse.

According to a report from WSMV4 News, officers rushed downtown after seeing a disturbing social media post from a 53-year-old man identified as Philip Anderson Jr. Police say he filmed himself driving through downtown Nashville while holding a gun, claiming he planned to find a “sniper location” and even use his car to hit people on Broadway.

Thankfully, officers located and arrested Anderson a few blocks away before anyone was hurt. Police say he was driving under the influence at the time.

New Safety Steps for Broadway

In response, city officials aren’t waiting to act. Over the next month, NDOT (Nashville Department of Transportation) plans to install retractable roadblocks along Broadway — barriers strong enough to stop a 60,000-pound truck moving at 50 miles per hour.

If you’ve spent any time downtown, you’ve seen just how busy Broadway gets on weekends. Thousands of people walk between honky-tonks, restaurants, and rooftop bars. It’s part of what makes Nashville so special — and why these new safety features are being welcomed by locals and visitors alike.

“I think that extra safety barriers down here would be really helpful for our community,” one local told WSMV4. “It’ll make it safer for the locals, for businesses that want to draw people downtown, and for tourists who might not be familiar with the area.”

What This Means for Visitors

If you’re planning a trip to Nashville soon, you might notice a few extra construction zones or traffic changes downtown. These updates are all part of the city’s effort to make Broadway safer and more walkable.

The good news? Music City is taking real steps to keep both visitors and locals safe while maintaining the fun, open energy that makes Broadway one of the most popular nightlife spots in the country.

And while the idea of a “mass casualty” alert can sound alarming, this story is ultimately about prevention — and quick action that worked.

So, when you’re walking between honky-tonks or snapping that photo by the “Batman Building,” know that Nashville is investing in keeping the good times rolling — safely.
