Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass Covers 10 Travel Segments—Here’s What Counts as One

For $499, Amtrak’s USA Rail Pass gives you up to 10 eligible Coach segments—a chance to build a vacation around several train journeys instead of one round trip.

One destination can take more than one segment to reach. Change trains once, and getting there generally uses two.

Travel from Memphis to another city with a train change in Chicago, and that one-way journey generally uses two segments.

That is the catch behind the USA Rail Pass: connections can spend your 10 segments faster than the map suggests. The pass can still be a good deal, but the itinerary matters more than the number on the offer.

What Counts as One Ride From Tennessee

Amtrak’s current USA Rail Pass FAQ defines a segment by the separate services you board. One direct train journey uses one segment. A journey with one connection generally uses two; two connections generally use three.

Tennessee travelers can board the City of New Orleans in Memphis or Newbern-Dyersburg. The route connects Chicago and New Orleans, giving both stations northbound and southbound options.

Ride directly from Memphis to Chicago, then return on another direct train, and the round trip uses two segments. A direct Memphis–New Orleans round trip also uses two.

Stopping to explore changes the count. Get off in one city, spend a night there and board a later train to continue, and those are separate segments.

Crossing midnight does not use another segment. Neither does passing through scheduled station stops while you remain on the same booked service. Count the trains and eligible connecting services you will take, rather than the cities along the way.

A Seat for Sale May Not Be a Pass Seat

The pass has no blackout dates or time-of-day restrictions. It does have limited availability.

Eligible departures must offer Sale or Value fares. A train offering only Flex fares cannot be booked with the pass, so paid seats can remain available after pass availability is gone.

That matters if your vacation depends on one particular departure. The $499 purchase does not guarantee a place on it.

The pass restrictions also exclude Acela, Auto Train, Canadian stations on the Maple Leaf, and Thruway buses numbered 7000–7999. A bus appearing in an Amtrak itinerary is not automatically covered; an eligible connecting service uses another segment.

Two deadlines control the trip. Under Amtrak’s terms, all travel must finish within 120 days of purchase and within 30 days of the first departure.

Leaving near the end of the 120-day period does not give you another full month. Your final arrival must fit inside both limits, with travel completed by 11:59 p.m. on the pass expiration date.

When the $499 Price Makes Sense

Use all 10 segments, and the average transport cost is $49.90 per segment. Use eight, and it rises to $62.38. Use four, and each used segment effectively costs $124.75.

Those are averages, not individual ticket prices. A pass can lose its advantage when your actual journeys have inexpensive ordinary fares—or when connections consume segments you expected to use elsewhere.

There is no prize for using the tenth segment.

Adding a stop just to finish the pass can bring another hotel bill, another meal out and another transfer with your bags. The useful number is what you would otherwise pay for the journeys you actually want.

The pass is most promising for several eligible intercity journeys, with enough flexibility to work around schedules and pass availability. One inexpensive round trip is a weaker reason to buy.

Repeated travel has a limit, too: the same station pair and intermediate route are capped at four one-way trips, or two round trips. The pass is also non-transferable; unused segments cannot be handed to someone else.

Whole-pass refunds follow separate rules. An unused, unbooked pass is refundable during its validity. Once booked, a full refund is available at least 48 hours before the first scheduled departure; less than 48 hours before departure, a 25% fee applies. After that scheduled departure, the pass is nonrefundable.

An Overnight Journey Still Means Coach

The pass covers Coach. Business Class and private rooms are not included, and you cannot buy it expecting to add a room later as a pass upgrade.

Amtrak’s reserved Coach guidance describes reclining seats, legroom, trays, outlets, reading lights and restrooms. Equipment varies, and a particular window seat or seat direction is not guaranteed.

A long ride without a transfer can conserve segments. It can also mean a long night sitting up.

If a bed is essential, price a separately purchased sleeping-accommodation journey into your plans. A shorter first trip can also help you decide how much overnight Coach travel you want in one vacation.

For a daytime introduction to train travel, Tennessee’s Hiwassee Loop scenic ride offers a separate excursion through a river gorge. It requires its own ticket and is not part of the Amtrak pass.

Meals need their own budget. Cafe food and drinks cost extra on most routes, though you may bring your own food to eat at your seat. Staff cannot heat or refrigerate it.

Before You Board

Buying the pass does not book your trains. Reserve each segment before boarding; Amtrak requires trip confirmation even on otherwise unreserved services.

Book your least flexible journeys first. Keep the dates, service numbers and segment count together so a changed connection does not quietly alter the rest of the trip.

Cancel an unwanted segment before its scheduled departure to return it to the pass. A no-show consumes the segment. For a missed connection or service disruption, contact an Amtrak agent for rebooking without losing it.

Pack for the transfers as well as the train. Amtrak’s general carry-on allowance is one personal item up to 25 pounds and two bags up to 50 pounds each, with size limits and some service-specific differences. Connecting carriers may have different rules.

For an accessible journey, arrange the spaces and boarding assistance needed for each leg. Accessibility arrangements on some partner connecting services may require up to 48 hours’ notice.

Amtrak offers online and app booking for several accessibility needs; some requests require an agent. For accessible reservation assistance, call 1-800-872-7245 or use relay 711, with your dates, service numbers and boarding needs ready.

Before buying, compare ordinary fares for your actual itinerary with the $499 pass price. Then account for lodging, meals and getting to and from Memphis or Newbern-Dyersburg. Buy the pass if those numbers work for the trip you want to take.
