Amtrak’s California Zephyr crosses the Rockies and Sierra Nevada on a roughly 2,438-mile journey between Chicago and Emeryville, California. Book a private room, and your ticket includes meals, bedding and a sleeping-car attendant.
The full trip takes about 52 to 53 hours, spread across three calendar days. Outside the windows are river canyons, rocky cliffs, mountain tunnels and stretches of scenery you can watch without keeping one eye on the road.
Inside, there’s a dining car with table service and a Sightseer Lounge built for taking in the view.
Two Mountain Ranges From Your Train Window
The California Zephyr runs daily in both directions between Chicago Union Station and Emeryville, across the bay from San Francisco.
Along the route, the scenery includes Byers Canyon, Gore Canyon, Glenwood Canyon, the Truckee River, Donner Lake and the Sierra Nevada.
The Sightseer Lounge gives passengers panoramic viewing and somewhere to spend time outside their seats or compartments. Coach passengers can enjoy the scenery, too. A sleeper ticket adds privacy, sleeping berths and included services.
One of the route’s most unusual stretches takes the view away entirely.
The train passes through Moffat Tunnel, a roughly 6.2-mile passage at an elevation of about 9,270 feet.
For that stretch, the mountain experience happens inside the mountain.
Westbound Puts the Colorado Climb Early in the Day
For travelers choosing a direction around the scenery, westbound offers a useful starting point.
Amtrak’s published timetable lists departure from Denver at 8:46 a.m. Mountain Time, followed by arrival in Glenwood Springs at 2:43 p.m. Mountain Time. That places the scheduled Colorado mountain crossing comfortably within the day.
The same schedule shows departure from Chicago at 2 p.m. Central Time on day one and arrival in Emeryville at 4:57 p.m. Pacific Time on day three.
Eastbound has substantial scenic viewing as well, although shorter winter days can affect the later Colorado portion.
Neither direction guarantees every landmark in daylight. The season, weather and delays can change what you see. Check the timetable for your travel date before booking.
Meals Are Part of the Private-Room Ticket
The California Zephyr offers Traditional Dining, with breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner served in the dining car.
For private-room passengers, meals served during their booked journey are included. Complimentary room service is also available, so eating in your compartment is an option.

Lunch and dinner reservations are arranged onboard. Dinner includes the first alcoholic drink, and menu examples include steak, chicken, salmon, pasta and children’s dishes. Specific choices can change.

Choose Your Room Around Space, Beds and Bathroom Access
All private rooms include shower access, but only some have their own bathroom.
The differences matter on a two-night trip. So does the sleeping arrangement: several room types use upper berths, which require climbing. Amtrak’s private-room comparison helps you compare the layouts before choosing.
Roomette: A private compartment for one or two passengers, measuring approximately 3 feet 6 inches by 6 feet 6 inches. Two daytime seats convert into a lower bed, with a separate upper berth above. Restrooms and showers are shared.
It’s a compact space. Keep a small overnight bag with you and avoid planning around a large suitcase inside the compartment.
Bedroom: About twice the space of a roomette, with a daytime sofa, a separate chair, and a private sink, toilet and shower. The standard sleeping arrangement accommodates up to two adults in upper and lower berths.

Family Room: Also called the Superliner Family Bedroom, this room spans the width of the car and accommodates up to two adults and two children ages 2–12. It has two upper and two lower beds, with shared restrooms and showers.
The children’s beds measure approximately 4 feet 7 inches and 4 feet 9 inches long. Check heights as well as ages before choosing this option.
Bedroom Suite: Two adjoining bedrooms provide four sleeping berths and two sets of private bathroom facilities. This is an option for four adults or families needing adult-length beds.
Amtrak directs passengers to book suites by calling 1-800-872-7245. Request the suite specifically; separately booked bedrooms may not connect.
Accessible Bedroom: Located on the Superliner’s entry level, this room provides wheelchair space, upper and lower berths, and an in-room toilet and sink. The shower is shared.
Confirm mobility-device dimensions, boarding assistance, bed transfers, shower needs and station access with Amtrak. Access to the dining and lounge cars also needs individual discussion. Passengers with disabilities can request meals delivered to their room.
You Can Keep Both Mountain Ranges and Shorten the Trip
You don’t have to start in Chicago to experience the route’s mountain scenery.
Denver to Emeryville keeps both the Rockies and Sierra Nevada while normally reducing the journey to one night onboard.
For a shorter introduction, Denver to Glenwood Springs covers part of the Colorado mountain crossing without committing to an overnight trip.
Compare the actual departure times and meal services for each segment. A shorter booking includes the meals served during that portion of the journey.

A Few Details to Settle Before Booking
The train ends in Emeryville, even though Amtrak markets the route as a Chicago–San Francisco journey.
San Francisco requires an onward connection. Available Amtrak Thruway buses can be included in an eligible itinerary, so check the destination and connection details when booking.

Pack medication and overnight essentials where you can reach them; checked bags are inaccessible during the ride. Download entertainment and travel documents before departure, and leave room for delays before firm onward plans.
Passengers departing Chicago with a same-day private-room ticket can use Union Station’s Metropolitan Lounge. Emeryville has no station lounge.
