They Came to Visit. One Moment Later, They Were Hooked on Nashville for Life

I asked Nashville visitors to share the exact moment they fell in love with Music City. Here's what they told me.

Robert's Western World

Robert's Western World came up again and again. One visitor described walking Broadway, people watching, then spending the rest of a Friday evening at Robert's — calling it “pure magic. Another traveler from England said Robert's was their first stop on their initial Nashville visit, and it's remained their go-to spot across four return trips. The atmosphere, food, friendly staff, and live music keep people coming back.

The Ryman Auditorium

Walking into the Ryman Auditorium hit different for visitors. One person described nearly hyperventilating inside the Mother Church of Country Music, calling it a solemn place that commanded respect.

Grand Ole Opry by Melissa Chippet

Grand Ole Opry

The Opry sealed the deal for multiple visitors. One traveler saw two shows there in 2007 and has been hooked ever since. Another got a backstage pass and met Bill Anderson, Jimmie Dickens, Josh Turner, and Roy Clark — even catching one of the last glimpses of Porter Wagoner hanging up his rhinestone jacket.

Tootsie's

For some people, it was as simple as walking into Tootsie's for the first time. No elaborate story needed — just stepping through those doors was enough.

Live Music Everywhere

The sheer amount of live music caught visitors off guard. One person crossed the pedestrian bridge to 2nd Avenue and got goosebumps hearing music pouring out of venues early in the day. Another described sitting on a rooftop bar with a drink in hand, listening to live music, and falling in love right there.

The Pedestrian Bridge

Walking across the pedestrian bridge and taking in the view made Nashville click for visitors. That skyline — especially the Batman Building — has stopped people in their tracks since at least 2006.

Lipstick Lounge

One local shared how welcoming Lipstick Lounge felt when they played trivia there for their birthday. The bartender, trivia host, and other patrons made them feel like family. The trivia host became a good friend who sadly passed during COVID, and there's now a picture on the wall that gets a toast every visit.

When It Was Grittier

Some longtime visitors remember when Nashville felt grittier and less commercial. They miss the old days before hotels blocked views of the Country Music Hall of Fame. A few mentioned the 70s and 80s when the city had more edge and fewer tourists — though they acknowledge that's just how cities change.

The Feeling You Get

What really came through in these responses? Nashville hits you fast. Whether it's your first cab ride from the airport, your first walk down Broadway, or your first time hearing live music spilling out of a dozen bars at once — there's usually one specific moment when you know you're somewhere special.
