Kenny Chesney is spending Thursday morning in New York City, but Nashville is all over the story.
The East Tennessee native is performing live at Rockefeller Plaza today, Sept. 17, as part of the 2026 Citi Concert Series on NBC’s TODAY. The free outdoor concert comes just eight days before Chesney releases his 21st studio album, Silver Sands Marina.
And while the cameras are pointed at Manhattan, the music Chesney is promoting has deep Nashville roots.
The new record draws on a long list of Music City songwriters, including Shane McAnally, Matraca Berg, Tia Sillers, Jessie Alexander, Jessie Jo Dillon, Adam Wright and Tenille Townes. Chesney again worked with longtime producer Buddy Cannon on the project.
So Nashville fans watching Thursday morning are getting more than another TV performance. They are seeing the opening stretch of what is shaping up to be a busy new chapter for one of Tennessee’s biggest country stars.
Kenny Chesney Is Live on the TODAY Plaza
Chesney’s Rockefeller Plaza concert is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 17.
Rockefeller Center lists the performance as a free event. Fans with passes were asked to check in by 5:15 a.m. Eastern, and the concert was expected to conclude around 9:30 a.m. Fans without an advance pass could also try the general-admission line, with entry depending on available space.
That means Nashville viewers can catch the action from home without dealing with a pre-sunrise line in Midtown Manhattan — probably not the worst trade.
The appearance arrives at an important moment for Chesney. His new album, Silver Sands Marina, is scheduled for release Sept. 25 on streaming services, CD and vinyl.
The New Album Has Plenty of Nashville DNA
For Music City, the most interesting part of the album may be the names behind the songs.
Silver Sands Marina is an 11-track project featuring collaborations with Megan Moroney, Lily Meola and Colbie Caillat. Its songwriting credits draw heavily from writers closely connected to Nashville’s country music community.

Chesney said the record grew into an album that works as a complete collection instead of simply a stack of individual tracks.
“There wasn’t a master plan,” Chesney said in material released through his official website. He explained that once the songs were placed together, the album began revealing a bigger emotional thread.
That approach feels especially tied to Nashville’s old-school album culture.
Music City may live in a singles-driven streaming world now, but songwriting rooms, producers and carefully built albums still matter here. Chesney’s project appears to lean directly into that tradition.
Nashville Fans Have Another Big Chesney Date to Circle
Thursday’s TV appearance is not the only Kenny Chesney news Nashville fans have to follow.
Chesney is also scheduled to return to Nissan Stadium on July 3, 2027, as part of his Original Vibe Room Tour.
The Nashville show is listed with a huge supporting lineup: Eric Church, Sheryl Crow and Greylan James.
The timing is especially interesting because presale activity for the tour begins today.
AXS lists the Vibe Room presale for the Nashville concert as beginning Thursday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m., with the public sale scheduled to begin Sept. 25.
In other words, while Chesney is performing for a national television audience in New York, some Nashville fans may also be thinking several months ahead to another summer night at Nissan Stadium.
That is a very Kenny Chesney kind of morning.
Chesney’s Tennessee Connection Runs Deep
Chesney was born in Knoxville and raised in Luttrell, Tennessee, before building the country music career that eventually turned him into one of the genre’s major stadium performers.
His relationship with Nashville has now stretched across decades of recording, songwriting, touring and awards.
That connection grew even stronger in 2025 when Chesney was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
His official album materials describe Silver Sands Marina as another project built through both his own instincts and Nashville’s songwriting community.
That is what makes Thursday’s TODAY appearance more locally relevant than it might look at first glance.
Yes, the stage is in New York.
But the songs being introduced to a national morning-TV audience were shaped by many of the writers and creative relationships that continue to make Nashville country music’s working center.
A Busy Stretch Is Just Beginning
The Rockefeller Plaza appearance is only part of Chesney’s current schedule.
He recently completed another run of shows at Sphere in Las Vegas. His new album arrives Sept. 25, and preparations are already underway for the 2027 stadium tour.
For Nashville fans, that makes this morning’s TV appearance less of a one-off performance and more of the beginning of a larger rollout.
First comes Rockefeller Plaza.
Then comes Silver Sands Marina.
And next summer, Nashville gets Kenny Chesney back on one of the biggest stages in town.
