A Train Ride Through Fall Colors Leaves Right From Nashville. Tickets Sell Fast.

Picture this. You settle into a train seat with a glass of wine in your hand. Outside the window, the hills slide by in gold and orange. No traffic. No one fighting over the radio. Just leaves.

Sounds like a fall dream, right? It's real, and you don't have to fly anywhere to do it.

Here is how the Nashville fall foliage train works, what it costs, and what to know before you book.

The Train That Leaves Right From Nashville

The Tennessee Central Railway Museum runs a fall foliage excursion that starts and ends in Nashville. You don't even have to leave town.

The 2026 rides are on Saturday, October 17, and Saturday, October 24. Seats are reserved, and they go quickly. That's why it helps to check the latest dates and seats at the link before you make plans.

What The Nashville Ride Is Like

The train leaves from the museum at 220 Willow Street. Boarding starts at 9 a.m. The train departs at 10 a.m. and gets back around 5 p.m. That's a full day.

It heads east out of Nashville on the Nashville and Eastern Railroad. The route follows the old Tennessee Central Railway line. The museum says you'll see Tennessee's rolling hills along the way.

Halfway through, the train stops in Watertown. You can grab lunch at local restaurants and wander through the shops. Think of it as a small-town stroll with a train as your ride.

Food, beer, and wine are for sale on board. But the museum says you can't bring your own food or drinks. So leave the cooler at home.

What Does It Cost?

Here are the 2026 ticket prices the museum lists:

  • Children under 12: $40
  • Coach: $80
  • Premier wine-tasting coach: $120
  • Dome seats: $160

A convenience fee gets added on top. All seats are reserved.

Why the big jump for the dome? The dome car has only 20 seats, and it gives you a high, glass-enclosed view of the countryside. It's the best seat in the house, and the museum prices it that way. With so few seats, it's no surprise they go fast.

Good To Know Before You Book

A few rules could save you some headaches.

The train runs rain or shine. Leaves still look pretty in a drizzle. Your hair may not.

Tickets are final. The museum doesn't give refunds or exchanges. So check your calendar twice.

Boarding takes five steps up. If anyone in your group has trouble with stairs, the museum asks you to contact them before you book.

When Do The Leaves Actually Change?

Good question. Nobody can promise a perfect color show.

Tennessee State Parks says Middle Tennessee leaves start changing in mid-October and peak around Halloween. Weather and rainfall can move that timeline up or back. So no date is guaranteed to be peak color.

The good news? October 17 and 24 both land in the usual changing window. You'd likely see plenty of color, even if the best of it comes a little later.

More Fall Train Rides Near Nashville

Want more than one option? Look south.

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, also called TVRM, runs scenic fall trips out of Chattanooga. Nashville to Chattanooga is commonly described as about a two-hour drive. Some routes run a bit longer, and traffic can add more time.

The trains leave from Grand Junction at 4119 Cromwell Road in Chattanooga. Check TVRM's site for dates and availability before you plan your day.

The Summerville Steam Special

This is the Chattanooga trip with the clearest fall color promise. TVRM says fall color shows up on select departures.

It runs on select dates from May 9 through November 8, 2026. The trip lasts all day, about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. TVRM asks you to arrive around 8:30 a.m.

The train rolls from Chattanooga into Summerville, Georgia, and back. You pass through the North Georgia foothills and countryside. You also get about an hour in downtown Summerville.

Fares shown for fall:

  • Coach without a meal: $95
  • With breakfast or lunch: from $125
  • With breakfast and lunch: $150
  • Golden Sand premium seating with breakfast and lunch: $220

The exact price depends on your date and ticket choice.

All ages are welcome. Kids age 2 and older need a ticket. The old train cars have stairs, and the Summerville Depot has no ramp at the platform. Keep that in mind if anyone in your group needs one.

The Chickamauga Turn

Want something shorter? This one is a good pick.

The Chickamauga Turn runs on select dates through November 1, 2026. The train leaves Chattanooga at 9:15 a.m. and returns around 3:30 p.m. That's a six-hour round trip.

You ride through the Tennessee and Georgia countryside to Chickamauga, Georgia. Then you get about 90 minutes to roam downtown on your own.

The stop is self-guided. You might visit the Gordon-Lee Mansion, see Crawfish Springs, or poke around the shops and cafés.

Fares shown for fall:

  • Adult coach without a meal: $65
  • Child coach, ages 2 to 12: $55
  • Golden Sand premium with breakfast and lunch: $135 for adults

One thing to know. TVRM's trip page talks about the countryside and the town stop. It doesn't promise peak fall color for any one date. So think of this as a fun train day with a chance of great leaves.

Which Chattanooga Train Should You Pick?

Want the best shot at fall color? Go with the Summerville Steam Special. It's the one TVRM calls out for fall color, and it runs the longest.

Want a shorter day with time to wander a small town? Choose the Chickamauga Turn. It costs less and gets you home earlier.

Either way, it's a long day out. Pack comfy shoes and charge your phone.

Want A Wilder Ride? Look At The Hiwassee Loop

If you're willing to drive farther, TVRM also runs the Hiwassee Loop. It's the most dramatic ride of the bunch.

The train follows the Hiwassee River through the Cherokee National Forest. Then it crosses a rare spiral railroad loop. That's a track that curves around and crosses over itself.

It leaves from Delano, not Chattanooga. Delano is roughly 180 to 190 miles from Nashville, so it's well past a two-hour drive. That makes it better for a weekend trip than a day trip.
