Picture New Orleans in January. You did not drive nine hours to get there, you did not stand in a security line, and you spent the morning watching the Mississippi Delta roll past a window nearly the height of the wall, behind a door you could close.
That trip is on sale right now, and the person sitting across from you rides free.
Amtrak’s Twice as Nice Sale closes October 31. Book a First-Class Roomette, bring a companion, and the second fare disappears. Travel runs November 1 through January 31.
The part that matters for us: you do not have to fly anywhere to use it. Most of Tennessee is within a few hours’ drive of a station where this deal works.
Where Tennessee Travelers Get On
You have two main options, and which one you use depends on which end of the state you live on.
Memphis puts you on the City of New Orleans, the daily train between Chicago and New Orleans. Tennessee has two stops on this qualifying route: Memphis and Newbern-Dyersburg. Southbound is a daytime ride, leaving Memphis around 6:55 a.m. and reaching New Orleans about 3:47 p.m. Northbound is the overnight, out of Memphis around 10:45 p.m. and into Chicago by roughly 9:15 a.m. Newbern-Dyersburg qualifies too, but its scheduled times fall in the middle of the night in both directions, so most travelers will want Memphis.
Atlanta is the smarter choice for East Tennessee. The Crescent runs daily between New Orleans and New York by way of Atlanta and Birmingham, and it qualifies for this sale too. Heading south, it is a daytime run of about 13 hours, roughly 9:08 a.m. Eastern out of Atlanta into New Orleans around 9:12 p.m. Central. Northbound leaves Atlanta in the evening, runs overnight through the Carolinas, and reaches Washington the following afternoon and New York that evening. Check exact times for your travel date, because schedules change.
| Driving from | Closest station | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Jackson | Memphis | 1 hr 30 min |
| Nashville | Memphis | 3 hrs |
| Clarksville | Memphis | 3 hrs 15 min |
| Murfreesboro | Memphis | 3 hrs 45 min |
| Chattanooga | Atlanta | 2 hrs |
| Knoxville | Atlanta | 3 hrs 15 min |
Drive times are approximate and assume you are not hitting Atlanta at rush hour, which you should plan around anyway.
If you are coming from Middle Tennessee, our guide to how Tennesseans still take Amtrak vacations covers the connection details, and we have mapped out the drive to Memphis. If it seems strange that the state’s biggest city has no station, you are right: Nashville lost its last passenger train in 1979, and four plans could eventually bring one back.

You Are Buying a Room, Not a Seat
This is the part that surprises people who have only flown.
By day, two seats face each other beside a window that runs nearly the height of the wall. At night they become a bed, with a second berth folding down from above. You get the bedding, pillows, towels and linens, and a door that closes.
You also get an attendant assigned to your car. They make up the beds, help with your bags, bring meals to your room if you would rather not walk to the dining car, and answer when you need something. Nobody is climbing over you to reach the aisle, and the restroom is a few steps away rather than thirty rows back.
Two honest limits before you fall in love with the idea.
The bathroom. Roomettes use shared restrooms and a shower elsewhere in the car. The larger Bedrooms have private facilities, and those are not part of this sale.
The upper berth. Two adults in a Roomette means one sleeps above the other. If climbing a short ladder is difficult for either of you, consider whether that works before booking. It is not something you can fix once the beds are down.
Worth knowing: luggage space is tight. Amtrak allows one personal item and two carry-ons each, but that is the ticket rule, not what fits in the room. Pack one small overnight bag apiece with medication, toiletries and chargers, and check whether your train and both stations handle checked bags. Otherwise you will spend the first hour of the trip playing a deeply unglamorous game of luggage Tetris.
Every Meal Is Already Paid For
Sleeping car passengers do not pay separately for onboard meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the fare, and so is the first drink at dinner. For a two-day trip, that is real money you are not spending on airport food.
What arrives depends on the train. The Crescent out of Atlanta and the City of New Orleans out of Memphis both use Flexible Dining: hot, ready-to-serve plates, no reservation needed, eat in the lounge car or have it brought to your room.
Traditional Dining is the white-tablecloth version, cooked onboard and served at your table in a real dining car. You get that on the California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, Empire Builder, Floridian, Silver Meteor, Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited.
So if the dining car is the whole fantasy, neither Tennessee-adjacent train delivers it. You would need to connect in Chicago or New Orleans.

What You Are Not Doing
Half the appeal here is subtraction.
No security checkpoint. No boarding groups. No gate agent sizing up your carry-on, and no fee for the second bag. You walk onto the platform and an attendant shows you to your room.
No driving, either. A couple heading from Nashville to New Orleans in December is otherwise looking at nine hours on the interstate in winter weather, trading off the wheel. On the train you are both looking out the window, and you arrive rested instead of stiff.
Your ticket also includes priority boarding and station lounge access: quiet seating, free Wi-Fi, snacks and an agent who can sort out connections. One catch worth knowing in advance. Those lounges are at Chicago, Washington, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Portland, with simpler waiting rooms in New Orleans and a few other cities. Memphis and Atlanta have neither, so your boarding station will be an ordinary wait. The perk shows up at the other end of the trip.
Where You Can Actually Go From Here
Four trips make obvious sense from a Tennessee starting point.
New Orleans in winter. Reachable from both Memphis and Atlanta, and December through January is the pleasant season there rather than the brutal one. You arrive downtown, not at an airport thirty minutes out.
Chicago for the holidays. North out of Memphis overnight, waking up at Union Station, which has one of the lounges your ticket includes.
Washington or New York. The Crescent out of Atlanta runs up the East Coast. For anyone who has wanted to see the Capitol or a Broadway show without flying or driving the I-81 corridor, this is the version where you sleep through the middle.
A connection to the big scenic routes. Ride to Chicago or New Orleans first, then transfer. That is how Tennessee travelers reach the trains people dream about.
| Route | Where it goes | Why you would pick it |
|---|---|---|
| California Zephyr | Chicago to the Bay Area via Denver | The Rockies, Colorado canyons and the Sierra Nevada, plus a full dining car |
| Empire Builder | Chicago to Seattle and Portland | Montana’s wide-open country; the train splits at Spokane, so your destination changes the scenery |
| Coast Starlight | Seattle to Los Angeles | Cascade mountains, California valleys and stretches of the Pacific |
| Floridian | Chicago to Miami | Roughly 47 hours to warm weather, which a private room makes bearable |
One winter caveat on the scenic routes: short days mean the best stretches can pass in the dark. Check the timetable before locking in a departure.
If a packaged version appeals more than assembling it yourself, we looked at a 13-day train tour that hits five national parks and what the brochure leaves out.
Decided a trip is worth taking? Now the fine print matters, because this is where people lose the discount without realizing it.
The Twice as Nice Sale at a Glance
| Detail | What Amtrak says |
|---|---|
| Book by | October 31, 2026 |
| Promo code | C102 |
| Travel window | November 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027 |
| What you get | One free companion sharing your room |
| Rooms that qualify | Roomette and Accessible Room |
| Routes | All long-distance trains except southbound Auto Train (Train 53) |
| Advance purchase | At least one day before departure |
| Blackout dates | Nov 18 to 24, Nov 27 to 30, Dec 17 to 22, Dec 26 to Jan 2 |
| Not combinable with | Other discounts, Guest Rewards points, Points and Cash bookings |
Those terms come straight from Amtrak’s official Twice as Nice page, which is also where the booking happens.
Three Ways People Lose This Discount
- Forgetting the code. Selecting a Roomette does not apply the offer. Enter C102 and confirm the discount appears before you pay.
- Expecting two rooms. One adult buys the room and the companion shares it. Same reservation, traveling together, tickets issued at the same time.
- Picking the wrong room. Roomettes and qualifying Accessible Rooms only. Coach, the larger Bedrooms and Family Rooms are all out.
The Dates That Still Work
Rather than list the blackout dates, here are the windows that still work.
| Window | Notes |
|---|---|
| Nov 1 to Nov 17 | The widest stretch, and early November gets more daylight than late winter |
| Nov 25 to Nov 26 | Thanksgiving Day itself falls here, which is unusual for a sale |
| Dec 1 to Dec 16 | Quiet weeks before the holiday crush |
| Dec 23 to Dec 25 | Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are not on the blackout list |
| Jan 3 to Jan 31 | A long, open run for anyone who can travel after the holidays |
Much of Thanksgiving week is blacked out, but November 25 and Thanksgiving Day, November 26, remain eligible. The stretch before Christmas and the week after it are blocked as well. Falling outside those dates does not guarantee a room either, since Amtrak says discounted inventory is limited. Flexible dates win here.
One ambiguity is worth flagging: the terms call these blackout days without spelling out whether an overnight trip that departs on an open date but rolls into a blocked one still qualifies. On a two-night route like the Floridian, that distinction matters. Check your exact departure in the fare finder rather than assuming.
If your dates land inside a blackout, the Christmas train rides near Nashville run on several of those same weekends.
Does a Free Companion Really Mean You Save Half?
Not necessarily, and this is the part worth your time.
Roomette prices move with route, date and demand. The promotion removes the companion fare. It does not halve the room, and Amtrak has published no fixed dollar amount anyone will save. A shared Roomette can still cost more than two Coach seats, though Coach gets you no bed and no meals.
Price the same trip three ways:
- Two passengers sharing a Roomette with code C102 applied
- Two passengers sharing a Roomette with no discount
- Two passengers in Coach
The gap between the first two numbers is your real savings. The gap between the first and third is what the comfort costs. Then add parking, hotels and getting to the station.
The Booking Trick That Buys You Time
Amtrak’s published refund policy includes risk-free cancellation. For reserved fares bought directly from Amtrak with cash, credit, or debit, canceling within 24 hours of purchase and before departure returns the money to your original form of payment.
So book before the deadline, run your comparison without the clock on you, and cancel inside that first day if the numbers do not hold up. Confirm the window applies to your booking at checkout, and do not let the 24 hours quietly lapse.
Canceling a Sleeper Costs More Than You Expect
Past that first day, private rooms carry their own penalty schedule, and it is stricter than a Coach ticket.
| When you cancel | What you get back |
|---|---|
| 121 or more days before departure | Full refund, no fee |
| 15 to 120 days before departure | 75% refunded, 25% forfeited |
| Within 14 days of departure | 25% forfeited, 75% as a nonrefundable eVoucher |
Notice the top row. The travel window ends January 31, roughly 100 days from this sale, so no booking made now can reach the 121-day tier. After the initial 24-hour cancellation window, ordinary voluntary cancellations on these sale dates incur a penalty.
One exception most people never hear about: cancel because of illness with a doctor’s note and Amtrak waives the usual penalties, for everyone in your party. Changes carry no fee, though fare differences apply. The full terms are here.
The Auto Train Exception
The Auto Train carries you and your vehicle between Lorton, Virginia and Sanford, Florida. Northbound qualifies for the sale. Southbound Train 53 is the only route excluded. Your vehicle still costs extra, and check-in closes hard at 2:30 p.m. for standard vehicles, 2:00 p.m. for motorcycles and trailers, with no exceptions.
Accessible Rooms Count Too
Qualifying Accessible Rooms are included in the promotion. They are built for passengers who need the features, including room for a mobility device, and they carry their own eligibility rules rather than serving as a roomier alternative for anyone who wants space. Amtrak recommends confirming accessible boarding at both your departure and arrival stations, so call 1-800-USA-RAIL to sort the details before you book.
Who Should Skip This Deal
- You are packing heavy. Two people with full-size suitcases will not be comfortable, and not every train and station handles checked bags.
- Someone cannot manage an upper bunk. The roomier Bedrooms are not part of the sale.
- You need a private bathroom. Roomettes use shared facilities down the car.
- You are bringing a pet. Pets are not permitted in First Class private rooms. Trained service animals are welcome under separate rules.
- You need to be online. Wi-Fi is not on every long-distance train, and where it exists it will not support streaming. Western routes run through long dead zones.
- You have a hard commitment on arrival day. Winter weather and freight traffic delay these trains regularly.
How to Book Before October 31
The process itself is simple. The verification is what people skip.
- Start at Amtrak’s Twice as Nice Sale page and use the fare finder there.
- Enter your departure city, destination, and dates.
- Select two passengers traveling together on the same reservation.
- Choose an eligible Roomette or qualifying Accessible Room.
- Apply promotional code C102.
- Confirm the companion discount actually appears before you pay.
- Review the total, the cancellation terms, and the travel times one more time.
Do not assume the promotion is live just because your dates qualify. Some departures have no discounted rooms left. Both tickets must be issued together by October 31, and Amtrak has not published a cutoff hour or time zone, so leaving it to the last evening is a gamble with no upside.
If the numbers work, the whole thing starts with a drive you have made a dozen times anyway. Three hours to Memphis or two to Atlanta, then a private room, meals included, and someone you like sitting across from you while the country goes by.
