Tennessee has no shortage of places that can stop you in your tracks.
There are waterfalls tucked into the Cumberland Plateau, rolling farmland in Middle Tennessee, Mississippi River sunsets in Memphis and mountain views that stretch for miles in the eastern part of the state.
But when Architectural Digest went looking for the prettiest town in Tennessee, it landed on a place many Tennesseans already know well: Gatlinburg.
The magazine included Gatlinburg in its 2026 list of the “Prettiest Town in Every US State,” choosing one community from each state rather than attempting to name a single winner for the entire country. The list was published Aug. 3.
For Tennessee travelers, the choice makes plenty of sense. Gatlinburg sits at one of the main gateways to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, putting a busy mountain town within minutes of forests, streams, hiking trails and scenic roads.
And that contrast may be the most Gatlinburg thing about Gatlinburg.
One minute, you can be walking past restaurants, attractions and shops downtown. Not long after that, you can be surrounded by trees inside the most famous mountain landscape in Tennessee.
Architectural Digest picks Gatlinburg for Tennessee
Architectural Digest's nationwide list includes places ranging from beach communities to mountain towns and historic villages.
The magazine said it looked for communities that combined visual appeal with culture. Gatlinburg was its Tennessee selection.
Knoxville News Sentinel reporter Afton Pratt highlighted the recognition in a Sept. 17 report, noting Gatlinburg's mountain setting and the many outdoor experiences available around town.
The designation is subjective, of course. Tennessee residents could make strong cases for plenty of other communities depending on what they consider beautiful.
But Gatlinburg has one advantage that is difficult to compete with: the Smokies are practically in its backyard.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park has three main entrances, including one through Gatlinburg. The other primary entrances are in Townsend, Tennessee, and Cherokee, North Carolina.
That means Gatlinburg is not simply a mountain town with a nice view in the distance. It is directly connected to one of Tennessee's biggest outdoor destinations.
The best scenery may be just beyond downtown
Visitors do not have to tackle a long mountain hike to understand why Gatlinburg made the list.
Several scenic drives put the surrounding landscape within reach of people who would rather experience the Smokies from their cars.
The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a narrow, one-way route near downtown that passes forest, mountain streams, historic buildings and access points for hiking trails and waterfalls.
Other drives in the region offer access to destinations including Newfound Gap, Cades Cove and sections of the Foothills Parkway. Gatlinburg's tourism office also points visitors toward routes through areas such as Greenbrier.
That gives Gatlinburg an unusual range.
You can plan an outdoors-heavy trip built around hiking and scenic drives. You can spend most of the day downtown. Or you can do a little of both without changing hotels or traveling to another part of East Tennessee.
For a state as geographically stretched out as Tennessee, that makes Gatlinburg more than a pretty postcard. It is also one of the easier places to build a short mountain getaway around.
Fall gives Gatlinburg another reason to show off
The Architectural Digest recognition arrives at an especially fitting time.
September puts Tennessee on the doorstep of fall, when the mountains around Gatlinburg begin moving toward their annual display of autumn color.
That season can also mean crowds, particularly when visitors head toward the Smokies for scenic drives and leaf-peeping.
Fortunately, visitors who would rather not spend the whole trip searching for downtown parking have another option.
Gatlinburg operates a free trolley system every day of the year. The trolleys connect stops around the city, and riders can use a park-and-ride lot at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center before heading downtown. During the May-through-October regular schedule, service runs from 8:30 a.m. until midnight, according to the tourism office.
There is one important detail for anyone planning to leave a vehicle inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The park does not charge an entrance fee, but vehicles parked for longer than 15 minutes need a parking tag.
That is worth remembering before turning a scenic drive into a hike.
Gatlinburg's beauty is only part of the story
Calling Gatlinburg Tennessee's “prettiest town” may sound as if the town is a quiet collection of cabins tucked into the woods.
Anyone who has visited knows that is not quite the full picture.
Gatlinburg is also a busy tourism town filled with attractions, shops, restaurants and entertainment. That lively downtown sits right beside some of the most recognizable scenery in the Southeast.
The combination is part of what makes the place unusual.
You do not have to choose between a mountain vacation and a town full of things to do. Gatlinburg has spent decades putting both within a small area.
That also explains why Tennesseans can have very different versions of the same Gatlinburg trip. For one family, it may mean hiking and waterfalls. For another, it may mean a trolley ride and a day downtown. Someone else may barely stop in town before heading deeper into the national park.
Architectural Digest's list does not settle the question of which Tennessee town is truly the most beautiful. Beauty is not something a magazine can measure with a ruler.
But the recognition does put a national spotlight on something Tennessee travelers have long understood: few towns in the state have a setting quite like Gatlinburg.
And with fall arriving in East Tennessee, Gatlinburg is about to make its strongest case of the year.
