I asked Nashville visitors which hot chicken spot actually lived up to the hype for them, and the answers were pretty clear.

Prince's Hot Chicken Dominates
If you're looking for the real deal, Prince's Hot Chicken is where you need to go. Specifically, the original location. Over and over again, people kept coming back to this spot.
Why? Because Prince's started it all. This is where Nashville hot chicken was born, and people who've tried the rest still come back to Prince's.
One person mentioned the Andre with ranch has them “in a chokehold.” Another said to get the breast quarter with fries and skip the other sides. And if you're not sure about heat levels, someone recommended going with Plain instead of Mild — which tells you everything you need to know about how hot this chicken really is.

Hattie B's came up a lot too. It's probably the most well-known spot for tourists, and plenty of people genuinely love it.
But here's the thing — some longtime visitors say Hattie B's used to be better. The sides have apparently gone downhill, and the chicken can be hit or miss these days. Still, if you're visiting Nashville for the first time, lots of people think it's worth trying.
Bolton's Gets Serious Love
Bolton's is another OG spot that people are passionate about. One person pointed out that half the people who say Prince's is the best haven't even been to Bolton's.
Someone else said Bolton's was unbeatable ten years ago. Another just said “Bolton's goddamnnnn” which pretty much sums up how people feel when they get it right.
Party Fowl Delivers
Party Fowl showed up repeatedly in the recommendations. People say it lives up to the hype with good food, good heat, and good beer.
It's not one of the original spots, but it's earned its place among Nashville hot chicken favorites.
The Dark Horse: 400 Degrees
Here's a spot that might surprise you. 400 Degrees started as a kiosk stall on Peabody, and people didn't think it could compete with the titans like Bolton's and Prince's.
Turns out they were wrong. Multiple people called out 400 Degrees as being way above the competition.
Other Spots Worth Knowing
Pepperfire got shoutouts from people who said it was their first love. The Tender Royale is apparently perfect. Someone mentioned when it was in East Nashville, which means the location has changed but the love hasn't.
Helen's came up as a no-hype spot with great food cooked to order. Their traditional mild wings all flats are supposed to be the best ever.
Reds 615 is apparently “the one to beat in Nashville right now” according to recent visitors.
Fowl Play in Gallatin is a bit outside Nashville, but people say it's legit. When you get a home run there, “your day's done.”
Hurt's Hot Chicken and Granddaddy's Hot Chicken both got mentions, with Granddaddy's serving hot shredded chicken potatoes.
