Do People Wear Cowboy Hats in Nashville? Let’s Talk About It

Ah, Nashville. The land of hot chicken, live music, and… cowboy hats? 🤠 You might be wondering: Do people actually wear cowboy hats in Nashville, or is that just a country music video myth? Great question—and the answer is a little more interesting than a simple yes or no.

Let’s dig in.

The Short Answer: Mostly Tourists

If you're strolling down Broadway, you'll probably spot a fair share of cowboy hats. But here's the kicker—most of those hats are sitting on the heads of tourists. That’s right. Whether it's a girls’ trip, a bachelor party, or someone trying to live out their country star fantasy, cowboy hats are part of the Nashville visitor uniform.

Locals? Not so much.

So What Do Locals Wear?

Nashville natives tend to keep it more low-key. You’ll see plenty of:

  • Ball caps
  • Wide-brimmed fashion hats
  • No hat at all

In fact, one commenter put it pretty clearly: “Cowboy hats? We wear those on horses or tractors—not downtown.” Ouch, but honest.

Exceptions to the Rule

Of course, there are exceptions. Some locals do rock a cowboy hat—especially if it's part of their daily wear, personal style, or they’re heading to a specific event like a rodeo or a themed party. One woman even said her husband wears his every day, no matter what state they're in.

And musicians? Some performers and artists definitely lean into the western look on stage. But in everyday life? Cowboy hats are far from the norm.

Cowboy Hat Etiquette in Nashville

Thinking of wearing one anyway? Go for it! But keep a few things in mind:

  • Take it off indoors—especially at restaurants or concerts like the Grand Ole Opry. No one wants to stare at the back of your hat for two hours.
  • Straw in spring/summer, felt in fall/winter—yep, there are seasonal hat rules. (Who knew?)
  • Boots and hats go hand in hand—but if your boots aren't broken in, maybe pack some backup sneakers.

Tourist Tip: Be Confident

So, will wearing a cowboy hat make you stand out as a tourist? Honestly, yes. But does that mean you shouldn’t wear one? Not at all.

If you love it, wear it. Nashville is all about self-expression, music, and having fun. Whether you're in boots, flip-flops, or tennis shoes with a cowboy hat (yes, someone mentioned that combo), just own your style.

As one person put it, “Wear whatever makes you happy!” 💃🕺

Final Take

Do people wear cowboy hats in Nashville? Yep—but mostly visitors. Locals tend to stick with ball caps or go hatless. But if you want to wear one, rock it with confidence and enjoy the ride. You’ll fit right in… with the rest of us tourists. 😉

  1. I’m from Texas I love Nashville and have spent a lot of time there on Broadway. I wear a cowboy hat daily everywhere you go. Sadly, I have never seen more guys wearing a cowboy hat backwards than in Nashville. So the touristy thing is true I have also been asked how many gallons my felt hat is lol that’s not a thing. I learned I stood out as a real cowboy in a sea of tourists who were wearing their “first pair of boots”
I’m ok with it not everyone is a cowboy but we sure do need more of em in this day and age
